How tall can a fence be in Irvine?

As of November 2026, the City of Irvine generally caps walls and fences at 7 feet inside required setback areas. In a front setback, a fence can be only 2.5 feet tall at the property line and can rise 1 foot for every 3 feet it sits back, up to 7 feet. Going over 7 feet in a setback takes Administrative Relief.

Why does every Irvine fence have two approvals?

The city and the homeowners association look at different things. The city checks height, setbacks, materials and, for walls, structural design. The association checks whether the fence matches the village: style, color, height and where it sits.

We plan for both from the first visit, so you are not waiting on one approval after the other.
